Gum Disease
Gum Disease, or Gingivitis, is a common issue experienced by many adults, caused by the effects of excess plaque. It is characterized by the presence of bleeding and or swollen, redder than pink, gums. The first signs of this condition in a patient, may be the appearance of blood when brushing their teeth, or they experience a greater degree of sensitivity with their gums.
Although many adults have gingivitis, if not addressed, it can lead to more serious forms of gum disease. In fact, gingivitis should be looked at as a signal marking the first stages stages of gum disease.
The good news, is at this stage, although there may be discomfort anxiety at the appearance of blood, it is still largely in a nondestructive state. And, if caught and treated early, it’s effects are entirely reversible.
Plaque and Tartar are the chief culprits for gingivitis, but other issues can contribute to it, such as mouth trauma, irritation from other teeth and prior dental work. Smoking can exacerbate the problem. Plaque is the number one cause, however. Plaque is formed when natural bacteria combine with carbohydrates in food to create an toxic, acid-like sticky film which attcacks the gums and tooth structure. When untreated plaque matures and hardens it becomes known as tartar. Tarter is faster and more aggressive in attacking the gums and teeth, than plaque is alone.
If left untreated, more serious diseases of the gums, such as periodontal disease can occur. Early intervention is the key.
