Abscessed Tooth
A tooth that is abscessed can be painful and get worse if left untreated. It is usually brought about as a result of severe damage or state of advanced tooth decay. When the decay or damage deteriorates the tooth structure sufficiently, the nerve dies, and a bacterial infection then develops inside the soft pulp tissue at the center of the tooth. Pus builds up in the center of the tooth from the ensuing infection, causing a severe toothache.
Since the nerve is dead in an abscessed tooth, there is little sensitivity to temperature changes. However, applying a cold compress will still reduce the swelling providing some temporary relief. Chewing and biting, or applying any sort of pressure to the tooth, will most likely be very painful, as it is sensitive to the touch. In terms of appearance, the gums may be red and swollen as well.
There are many causes for an abscess to form in a tooth. A cavity that has been left untreated, can develop into an abscess. An filling may have given way, or other substantial tooth trauma may have occurred. Whatever the cause, it is important that this condition not be ignored. It’s wise to see a qualified Dental Professional as soon as possible, before things get worse.
Dr. Jennifer Bartlett has years of experience treating painful tooth abscesses and resolving the pain that her patients are in. Many people suffering, may have some reservations about seeing a dentist. Dr. Bartlett understands these concerns, and will work to ensure that the process is as pain-free as possible. Since so much of the pain is caused by infection that has attacked the soft tissue at the center of the tooth, her first priority will be to resolve the infection. Her goal will be to preserve as much of your tooth as possible. In order for the tooth to be saved, many times a root canal may be necessary. In a root canal, the nerve and soft pulp tissue are removed, but the root and surface area of the tooth is preserved. Once this procedure is complete, she will fill the tooth and apply a dental crown. Rarely, she may have to extract the tooth. If this happens, Dr. Bartlett will do her best to make the procedure as painless and comfortable as possible, using the latest pain prevention techniques. Going to the dentist is not nearly as painful as it once was.
