Scaling

Scaling is a deep cleaning procedure that goes beyond normal teeth cleaning, to remove any tartar and plaque that has hardened and extends below the gum line, that regular cleaning cannot reach.  Tartar and plaque when left untreated can lead to more pronounced dental problems such as tooth decay and erosion, which in turn can lead to infections and tooth loss.  Plaque that has hardened and extends below the gum line is called tartar, and can be impossible to remove and get at without scaling.

Dr. Jennifer Bartlett uses many specialized tools during a scaling procedure.  Ultrasonic machines are very helpful in loosening any tartar material build-up that would otherwise be difficult to remove.  The initial process of scraping and removing tartar is called scaling.  The finishing aspects are known as planing.  Planing involves a smoothing out of the surface tooth area below the gum line, much like a polishing does after a cleaning.  This scaling makes it resistant to new plaque attaching, and promotes healing for gums that were infected or swollen from the effects of tartar.  Because the procedure is below the gum line, sedation is necessary to allow the patient to remain pain and stress free.  Dr Bartlett will also provide aftercare instructions intended to assist in the healing process.

Scaling can also reverse and reduce gingivitis, or bleeding sensitivity in gums, a precursor to more serious gum diseases like peridontitis, and can help bring the teeth and gums into a more natural state of balance and overall health.  This is a great time, if the patient has had weak oral hygiene habits, to begin fresh and, take  more control over their dental health, ensure healthier happier teeth for years to come.
