Teeth Polishing
Teeth Polishing is typically done as the final step after teeth have been cleaned or scaled from plaque and tartar. Polishing makes the teeth smooth and comfortable and feel great. It also may help remove some minor staining that the teeth may have. Many patients following the procedure report that their teeth feel almost “new” and are excited at having a fresh start towards improved oral hygiene.
Dr. Jennifer Bartlett uses a couple of specialized tools to polish the teeth, one is called a prophy jet polisher, and the other is a suction-type polisher.
A Prophy jet polisher uses a pressurized water jet along with a special baking soda based paste to clean the remaining plaque from the teeth and polish them. The baking soda paste serves a dual purpose, both as a stain cleaner and an acid neutralizer.
A Suction cup polisher uses a small cup where the paste is applied and then held against the tooth, creating a gentle sanding and buffing action for the teeth.
There is nothing quite like the feeling of freshly cleaned and polished teeth. If someone has been lax in their dental hygiene, it is a great opportunity to receive a fresh start to get back on track and stay on top of their oral health needs. It is possible to have teeth cleaned without polishing them, but many patients feel that this step really completes the overall teeth cleaning experience and they are very happy with the remarkable improvement in color, feel and appearance.
